The World Maritime News portal reports on the first site for testing unmanned navigation projects located on the western coast of Finland.
This testing site entitled Jaakonmeri Test Area will be managed by Digital, Internet, Material & Engineering Co-Creation company (DIMECC). Its offshore part is 17.8 km long and 7.1 km wide. According to the portal, the facility will be suitable, in particular, for testing vessels under ice conditions.
Presumably the site will be used by companies and research institutions for testing autonomous navigation and unmanned vessel technologies. The first tests have been planned for Spring 2018, however, some may volunteer to start as early as 2017.
